How to get your business recommended by ChatGPT (2026)

How to get your business recommended by ChatGPT (2026) – cover image
Short answer: To get recommended by ChatGPT, make your business easy to find and easy to trust online. Allow OpenAI’s search crawler (OAI-SearchBot) to access your site, state your services, area and contact details clearly, keep your listings consistent everywhere, and build a steady flow of genuine reviews. There is no paid route into its answers and no guaranteed placement.

How does ChatGPT decide which businesses to recommend?

When a question needs current information, ChatGPT searches the web and builds its answer from the pages it finds. It then names businesses that the sources it read describe clearly and positively.

According to OpenAI’s ChatGPT search help article, ChatGPT usually rewrites your question into one or more focused searches and sends them to third-party search providers. For local questions, such as “a reliable electrician in Maidstone”, it may also use your approximate location and work with trusted providers of local business information. On the phone apps, answers can include a map.

OpenAI does not publish a full list of the providers it uses, and the details change. So the safest approach is not to chase one data source. Instead, make sure the same accurate facts about your business appear everywhere ChatGPT is likely to look.

Can ChatGPT actually see your website?

Only if you let it. OpenAI says a site must allow its search crawler, OAI-SearchBot, to be eligible to appear in ChatGPT search results.

Check your robots.txt file and any security or CDN settings. Some firewall tools block unfamiliar bots by default, which can quietly shut AI search out. OpenAI also notes that placement is never guaranteed, even when access is allowed.

It also helps to be visible in Microsoft Bing. Bing now offers an AI Performance report in Bing Webmaster Tools, which shows how often your pages are cited in Copilot and Bing’s AI answers. That is a useful free signal of whether AI tools can find you at all.

What should your website say to get picked?

Your website should answer the questions a customer would ask, in plain sentences that a machine can quote. Vague slogans give ChatGPT nothing to work with.

Think about what an AI assistant needs before it will confidently name you. It wants to know what you do, where you do it, who you help and why you are a safe choice. Put those facts in text, not just in images.

  • One page per main service, with a clear opening sentence such as “We fit and repair boilers across Canterbury and east Kent.”
  • A visible list of the towns and postcodes you cover.
  • Your business name, phone number and email in the same format on every page.
  • Qualifications, accreditations and insurance stated in words.
  • An FAQ section that answers real customer questions directly.
  • Schema markup for your business type, address and services.

Why do reviews and listings matter so much?

Reviews and listings are how AI tools check that you are real, active and trusted. A business with many recent, detailed reviews is easier to recommend than one with a handful from years ago.

ChatGPT reads what other sites say about you, not just your own website. That includes review platforms, directories, maps listings, local news and community forums. If those sources disagree about your name, phone number or service area, the assistant has less reason to trust any of them.

What should you avoid?

Avoid anything that tries to trick the system. AI assistants are designed to cross-check sources, so shortcuts tend to backfire.

  • Fake or incentivised reviews. They breach platform rules and can get your profile restricted.
  • Stuffing pages with town names or keywords that read badly to people.
  • Paying for “guaranteed ChatGPT placement”. No one can promise that, as OpenAI itself says placement is not guaranteed.
  • Letting old addresses, phone numbers or business names linger on directories.

How do you know if it is working?

Test it yourself, then look for referral traffic. Neither method is perfect, but together they give you a reasonable picture.

Ask ChatGPT the kinds of questions your customers ask, such as “best roofer near Ashford with good reviews”. Try a few variations and note whether you appear and what is said about you. Answers vary between sessions, so check regularly rather than once.

In Google Analytics 4 you can often see visits referred from chatgpt.com. Our guide to tracking AI traffic in GA4 shows how to set up a simple report.

Is this different from normal SEO?

Mostly, no. The work that helps you rank locally on Google also helps ChatGPT find and trust you.

The main differences are emphasis. AI search rewards clear, quotable facts and consistent mentions across the web, and it gives no credit for tricks. FAQs

Can I pay to be recommended by ChatGPT?

No. OpenAI says placement in ChatGPT search results is not guaranteed, and there is no way to buy your way into its answers. The reliable route is a clear website, consistent listings and genuine reviews.

What is OAI-SearchBot?

OAI-SearchBot is OpenAI’s crawler for ChatGPT search. If your robots.txt file or firewall blocks it, your site is not eligible to appear in ChatGPT search results.

Does ChatGPT use Google Business Profile?

OpenAI does not publish a full list of its data sources. Keeping your Google Business Profile, Bing Places and Apple Business Connect listings accurate and consistent covers the most likely sources.

How long does it take to appear in ChatGPT?

There is no fixed timescale. Changes to your site and listings need to be crawled and picked up by search providers, which can take weeks, and results vary between conversations.

Do reviews help with ChatGPT recommendations?

Yes, in practice. Recent, detailed reviews on trusted platforms give AI assistants independent evidence that you are active and reliable.
