How to see traffic from ChatGPT and AI tools in GA4 (2026)

How to see traffic from ChatGPT and AI tools in GA4 (2026) – cover image
Short answer: Open Reports, then Acquisition, then Traffic acquisition in Google Analytics 4 and look for the AI Assistant channel, which Google added in May 2026. To see individual tools, switch the dimension to Session source / medium and search for names like chatgpt.com or perplexity. For tighter control, build a custom channel group with a regex rule that matches AI sources.

Why track AI traffic at all?

Because more people now ask ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity for recommendations before they search Google. If those tools mention your business, some of those people will click through to your site.

Knowing how many visits come from AI tools, which pages they land on and whether they enquire tells you if your AEO work is paying off. The numbers are usually small for local businesses, but the trend is worth watching. It also helps you judge where to spend your marketing time.

Does GA4 track AI traffic automatically?

Yes, partly. On 13 May 2026 Google added a dedicated AI Assistant channel to the Default Channel Group in GA4.

Google’s release notes say visits from chatbots such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude now appear under this channel, with the medium set to “ai-assistant” and the campaign shown as “(ai-assistant)” (Google Analytics: what’s new). Google has not published the full list of AI tools it recognises, so some smaller tools may still appear as ordinary referrals.

ChatGPT also helps. OpenAI says ChatGPT automatically adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to links it sends people to, so those visits are labelled clearly in analytics (OpenAI publishers and developers FAQ).

How do you find AI traffic in the standard reports?

Start with the Traffic acquisition report. It takes about two minutes.

  1. In GA4, click Reports in the left menu.
  2. Open Acquisition, then Traffic acquisition.
  3. Look for the AI Assistant row in the channel table. Set the date range to start after 13 May 2026 for the cleanest view.
  4. To see which tools sent visits, click the dimension drop-down above the table and choose Session source / medium.
  5. Type chatgpt, perplexity, gemini or copilot into the search box above the table.
  6. Add a secondary dimension of Landing page + query string to see which pages AI visitors arrive on.

If you cannot see Traffic acquisition, someone with Editor access can add it back to the left menu through the report library (GA4 Traffic acquisition report help).

Which AI sources should you look for?

These are the referral sources you are most likely to see from AI tools. Names can change, so check your own reports for anything similar.

AI toolSource you may see in GA4
ChatGPTchatgpt.com (older visits may show chat.openai.com)
Perplexityperplexity.ai
Microsoft Copilotcopilot.microsoft.com
Google Geminigemini.google.com
Claudeclaude.ai
DeepSeekchat.deepseek.com

Google’s own AI Overviews and AI Mode are different. They sit inside Google Search, so clicks from them are generally counted as organic Google traffic, not as AI referrals. Our guides to AI Overviews and AI Mode explain more.

How do you build a custom AI channel group?

A custom channel group lets you decide exactly which sources count as AI. It is useful if the built-in channel misses a tool you care about, and it can be applied to past data.

  1. Go to Admin, then Data display, then Channel groups. You need Editor access or above.
  2. Click Create new channel group. This copies the default channels for you to edit.
  3. Name it, for example “Channels with AI”.
  4. Click Add new channel and call it “AI tools”.
  5. Set the condition to Source, choose matches regex, and paste the pattern below.
  6. Click Reorder and drag “AI tools” above Referral, then click Apply and Save group.
chatgpt\.com|openai\.com|perplexity\.ai|copilot\.microsoft\.com|gemini\.google\.com|claude\.ai|deepseek\.com

Order matters because GA4 assigns each visit to the first channel whose rule it matches. Google’s own help page uses the same approach and recommends placing an AI channel above Referrals (GA4 custom channel groups help). Standard GA4 properties can have two custom channel groups. To use yours, open Traffic acquisition and pick the new group from the dimension drop-down.

What are the limits of AI traffic data?

Treat the numbers as a floor, not the full picture. Some AI-driven visits will never be labelled as AI.

  • Some apps and browsers do not pass on referral information, so visits can land in Direct.
  • Many people read an AI answer, then search your business name on Google, which shows up as organic or Maps traffic.
  • Phone calls prompted by an AI answer will not appear in GA4 at all unless you track call clicks.
  • Small numbers swing a lot month to month, so compare quarters rather than weeks.

That is why we pair GA4 data with simple checks: asking AI tools about your services and asking new customers how they found you. If AI visibility is low, start with our guide to getting recommended by ChatGPT.

FAQs

Does GA4 show ChatGPT traffic automatically?

Yes, in most cases. Since May 2026 GA4 has an AI Assistant channel in its Default Channel Group, and ChatGPT adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to links it sends.

Where is the AI Assistant channel in GA4?

Go to Reports, then Acquisition, then Traffic acquisition. AI Assistant appears as a row in the channel table alongside Organic Search and Referral.

Do clicks from Google AI Overviews show as AI traffic?

Generally no. AI Overviews and AI Mode are part of Google Search, so those clicks are usually counted as organic search.

Will a custom channel group change my old data?

Custom channel groups can be applied to reports retroactively, so you can see how past traffic would have been grouped. Your underlying data is not altered.

Why is my AI traffic so low?

For most local businesses, AI referrals are still a small share of visits. Some AI-driven visits also arrive as direct or branded search traffic, so the true influence is likely higher than GA4 shows.
