How to write website content that AI tools quote (2026)

How to write website content that AI tools quote (2026) – cover image
Short answer: To get quoted by ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and Perplexity, write pages that answer real questions directly. Use question-style headings, put the answer in the first sentence or two, and back it up with specific facts. Use lists and tables where they help, keep key information in plain text, and make sure AI crawlers can access your site. Good SEO underneath is still essential.

What makes content easy for AI tools to quote?

AI tools quote content that answers a specific question clearly, in a passage that still makes sense on its own. Specific, factual and well-organised beats long and vague.

Answer engines do not read a page the way a person does. They break it into chunks, find the passage that best matches the question, and use it to build a reply. If your answer is buried in the fourth paragraph of a long introduction, it is harder to use. If it sits right under a matching heading, it is easy.

Google says there is no special trick for its AI features. Normal SEO best practice applies, and there is no special structured data you need to add (Google Search Central). So everything below is simply good writing for people that also happens to suit AI tools.

How should you structure a page?

Use clear headings that match real questions, short sections, and lists or tables where information naturally fits them. Avoid long walls of text.

Microsoft’s Bing team has published some of the most specific advice available. It recommends headings that act like chapter titles, question-and-answer pairs, bulleted lists, numbered steps and comparison tables. It also warns against hiding key answers in tabs or expandable menus, putting core information in PDFs, or leaving key details only in images (Microsoft Advertising blog).

For a small business, a good service page might follow this shape: a short summary of what you do and where, then sections such as “What does the service include?”, “How long does it take?”, “Which areas do you cover?” and an FAQ at the end. Our web design team builds pages around this structure.

What should you write in the first lines of each section?

Write the answer first. One or two plain sentences that directly answer the heading, then the detail.

This is sometimes called answer-first or “inverted pyramid” writing. It helps busy readers and it helps AI tools, because the most quotable passage sits exactly where they look. Each answer should stand alone. Avoid openings like “As mentioned above” or “It depends”, which lose their meaning when lifted out of the page.

The stronger versions are specific, factual and checkable. The weak versions could describe any business, so they give an AI tool nothing to work with.

Do facts, figures and sources really help?

The evidence suggests they do. Specific facts, statistics and cited sources tend to make content more visible in AI answers.

Academic research on generative engine optimisation, presented at the KDD 2024 conference, tested different ways of editing content. Adding quotations, adding statistics and citing sources performed best, with gains of up to around 40% in visibility. Keyword stuffing gave little or no benefit (Aggarwal et al., arXiv).

For a local business, this does not mean inventing numbers. It means stating real details: years trading, accreditations, the towns you cover, typical turnaround times, guarantees you offer. Where you mention a rule or regulation, link to the official source. Never make up statistics or reviews. AI tools and customers both lose trust quickly when facts do not hold up.

What technical basics stop AI tools seeing your content?

If crawlers are blocked, or your key content is not in plain text, even brilliant writing will not be quoted. Check the basics first.

  • Allow Googlebot and Bingbot in your robots.txt file, and check your hosting or CDN is not blocking them.
  • Allow OAI-SearchBot if you want to appear in ChatGPT search. OpenAI says sites that opt out will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers (OpenAI).
  • Keep prices, opening hours and service areas in text, not just in images or PDFs.
  • Use structured data that matches what visitors can see on the page.
  • Make sure pages load quickly and work well on mobile.
  • Link related pages together so crawlers can find them.

What checklist should you use before publishing?

Run every important page through a short checklist before it goes live. It takes a few minutes and catches most problems.

  1. Does each heading match a question a real customer asks?
  2. Does the first sentence under each heading answer it directly?
  3. Would each answer still make sense if copied on its own?
  4. Have you included specific, true facts rather than general claims?
  5. Is key information in text, not hidden in tabs, images or PDFs?
  6. Is there a short FAQ section with self-contained answers?
  7. Can search and AI crawlers access the page?

Once pages are live, ask ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google the same questions each month and note whether you are mentioned. Our guide to getting recommended by ChatGPT covers that next step.

FAQs

How do I get my website quoted by ChatGPT?

Make sure OAI-SearchBot can crawl your site, then write pages that answer customer questions directly with specific facts. Strong reviews and consistent business details across the web also help.

Do I need special schema for Google AI Overviews?

No. Google says there is no special structured data needed for AI Overviews or AI Mode. Use normal schema where relevant and make sure it matches the visible page content.

How long should answers be?

Aim for one or two sentences that directly answer the question, followed by supporting detail. Short, self-contained answers are easiest for AI tools to quote.

Should I hide FAQs in accordions?

Microsoft advises against hiding key answers in tabs or expandable menus because AI systems may not render them. Showing answers in plain view is the safer choice.

Does writing for AI make content worse for people?

No. Clear headings, direct answers and specific facts make pages easier for customers to read too. Good AI-friendly writing is simply good writing.
