What is Google AI Mode?
AI Mode is a separate tab in Google Search where you can ask longer, more detailed questions and get an AI-written answer with links. You can then ask follow-up questions, like a conversation.
Google describes it as its most powerful AI search experience, with more advanced reasoning. When it launched in the UK, Google said it ran on a custom version of its Gemini model. You can type, speak or use a photo to ask a question. If Google is not confident in an AI answer, it shows normal web results instead.
When did AI Mode launch in the UK?
Google announced AI Mode for the UK on 28 July 2025, and the rollout began that week. It appears as a tab on the search results page and in the Google app on Android and iOS.
In its announcement of AI Mode in the UK, Google said early users were asking questions two to three times longer than traditional searches. That matters for businesses. People are describing their situation in detail, such as “I need a plumber in Canterbury who can fix a leaking combi boiler this week and has good reviews”, rather than typing two words.
How is AI Mode different from AI Overviews?
AI Overviews are summaries that sometimes appear above normal results. AI Mode is a full conversational experience that people choose to open.
| Feature | AI Overviews | AI Mode |
|---|---|---|
| Where it appears | Top of some normal results pages | Its own tab and in the Google app |
| When it shows | Only when Google thinks it adds value | Whenever someone uses the tab |
| Follow-up questions | Limited | Built for back-and-forth |
| Question length | Any search | Often long and detailed |
| Links to websites | Yes, supporting links | Yes, supporting links |
| Special optimisation | None required | None required |
Both use a technique Google calls query fan-out. The system splits a question into subtopics and runs many related searches at once. That means a page can be cited for one part of a question even if it would not rank first for the whole thing. You can read more in our guide to AI Overviews for local businesses.
Want your business to show up in AI search?
We help UK local businesses with websites, profiles and content that Google and AI tools can understand. Every project is quoted to fit your needs.
How do you show up in AI Mode?
The same way you show up in Google Search. Google’s guidance on AI features says there are no additional requirements and no special optimisations needed for AI Mode.
The technical baseline is simple. A page must be indexed and eligible to appear in Search with a snippet. After that, AI Mode draws on the same signals as normal search. Because questions are longer and more specific, detailed and well-organised pages have more chances to match part of a question.
- Write one clear page for each service and each main area you cover.
- Open each section with a direct answer, then add detail.
- Include specifics people mention in long questions, such as response times, accreditations, brands you work with and payment options.
- Keep your Google Business Profile complete, with accurate hours, services and photos.
- Build a steady flow of genuine reviews that mention the work you did.
- Make sure nothing blocks Googlebot, and avoid nosnippet tags on pages you want cited.

Does AI Mode matter for local businesses?
Yes, especially for considered purchases. When someone is comparing options or describing a specific problem, AI Mode is well suited to their search.
Think about a kitchen fitter, a private dental clinic or a wedding venue. Customers often have several requirements at once. AI Mode lets them ask for all of them in one go, then narrow down with follow-ups. Businesses whose websites, reviews and listings clearly cover those details have a better chance of being mentioned.
Simple “near me” searches still lean heavily on map results and Business Profiles. So keep your Google Maps listing strong while you improve your website content. If you serve several towns, our locations page shows the areas we work in.
How can you measure AI Mode traffic?
Google includes AI Mode traffic in the Search Console Performance report under the Web search type. It is not shown as a separate line.
So look for patterns over time rather than a single number. Longer, question-style queries appearing in your Search Console data can be a sign people are finding you through conversational searches. Track enquiries alongside traffic, because a smaller number of well-informed visitors can still bring in more work.
