What is AEO? A plain-English guide for UK businesses

What is AEO? A plain-English guide for UK businesses – cover image
Short answer: AEO, or answer engine optimisation, is the work of making your website easy for AI tools to understand and quote. Answer engines include Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, ChatGPT search and Perplexity. They give people a written answer instead of a list of links. Good AEO is built on normal SEO, plus clear, direct answers to the questions your customers ask.

What does AEO actually mean?

AEO means shaping your content so that tools which answer questions directly can find it, trust it and use it in their answers. The goal is for your business to be the source they quote or recommend.

For years, search worked one way. Someone typed a query, Google showed ten blue links, and the person clicked one. Now many searches end with a written answer at the top of the page, or a conversation in a chatbot. Those tools still read websites to build their answers. AEO is about making sure yours is one they read, understand and credit.

The term is not new. Marketers used it for featured snippets and voice assistants years ago. What has changed is scale. AI answers now appear for a large share of questions, so the idea matters to every business with a website.

Which answer engines matter in the UK?

For most UK small businesses, Google is still the most important. ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot and Perplexity are the other main names, and all of them can show links to the websites they used.

Google brought AI Overviews to the UK in August 2024. It then launched AI Mode, a more conversational search tab, across the UK in July 2025, according to PA Media reports. OpenAI launched ChatGPT search in October 2024 and, by February 2025, had opened it to everyone where ChatGPT is available, with no sign-up needed (OpenAI).

Answer engineWhat it doesShows sources?
Google AI OverviewsA short AI summary above the normal resultsYes, links to sources
Google AI ModeA separate tab for longer, follow-up questionsYes, links alongside the answer
ChatGPT searchSearches the web when a question needs fresh informationYes, inline links and a Sources panel
PerplexitySearches the web in real time for every answerYes, numbered citations
Microsoft CopilotAI answers that draw on Bing searchYes, linked references

Perplexity describes its own approach plainly: each answer includes numbered citations linking to the original sources (Perplexity Help Center). That link is your opportunity. If you are cited, interested people can click through. For a fuller tour of each tool, see our guide to AI search engines.

How is AEO different from normal SEO?

AEO is not a replacement for SEO. It is a layer on top of it. SEO helps your pages get found and ranked; AEO helps the best parts of those pages get lifted into an answer.

Google is clear about this. Its own documentation says there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and no special optimisations needed beyond normal SEO best practice (Google Search Central). In other words, if Google cannot crawl, index and trust your page, no amount of AEO wording will help.

The difference is mostly about how you write and organise content. Traditional SEO often focused on ranking a whole page for a keyword. AEO focuses on whether a single paragraph can answer a question clearly on its own. If you want to see how AEO compares with GEO, read AEO vs GEO vs SEO.

How do answer engines choose what to quote?

Nobody outside these companies knows the exact rules. But the public guidance points the same way: they favour pages that are crawlable, clearly structured, specific and trustworthy.

Microsoft’s Bing team has published unusually detailed advice. It recommends clear headings, question-and-answer pairs, lists and tables, and short answers that make sense when pulled out of context. It also warns against hiding key answers in tabs, PDFs or images (Microsoft Advertising blog).

Google adds a few practical points: let its crawler in, keep important content as text, make sure any structured data matches what is visible on the page, and keep your Business Profile up to date. For local businesses, that last point is easy to overlook. Our Google Maps listing guide covers it step by step.

What does good AEO look like on a small business website?

Good AEO looks like a page that answers real customer questions quickly and plainly. Imagine a customer asking a knowledgeable friend, and write the reply.

Here is a simple checklist you can apply to any service page:

  • The first one or two sentences under each heading answer the heading directly.
  • Headings are written as the questions customers actually ask, such as “How long does a boiler service take?”
  • Your business name, service area and services are stated clearly in text, not just in a logo or image.
  • Specific facts are included: what is covered, typical timescales, areas served, qualifications.
  • An FAQ section answers common questions in short, self-contained replies.
  • Structured data, such as LocalBusiness or FAQ schema, matches what is on the page.
  • Reviews and your Google Business Profile tell the same story as your website.

Where should you start?

Start with the pages that already bring in enquiries, and make them clearer. You do not need to rebuild your site.

  1. List the ten questions customers ask most often, by phone, email or in person.
  2. Check your main service pages answer those questions in plain text.
  3. Rewrite the opening of each section so the answer comes first.
  4. Add an FAQ section with short, factual answers.
  5. Update your Google Business Profile so it matches your website.
  6. Ask ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google the same questions and record what they say.

FAQs

What does AEO stand for?

AEO stands for answer engine optimisation. It means making your website easy for AI tools such as Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT and Perplexity to understand and quote in their answers.

Is AEO the same as SEO?

No, but they overlap heavily. SEO helps your pages rank and get indexed, while AEO helps specific answers on those pages get used by AI tools. AEO does not work without solid SEO underneath.

Does Google need special code for AI Overviews?

No. Google says there are no extra technical requirements or special schema needed to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. Normal SEO best practice applies.

Is AEO worth it for a small local business?

Yes, because the work also improves your normal search visibility and makes your pages clearer for customers. Most of it is better writing rather than new technology.

How long does AEO take to show results?

It varies. Changes to existing pages can be picked up within weeks once they are recrawled, but building enough trust to be cited regularly usually takes months of consistent work.
