Marketing for landscapers and gardeners: a UK guide

Marketing for landscapers and gardeners: a UK guide
Short answer: Landscapers win work with photos, reviews and timing. Set up Google Business Profile with service areas and regular project photos, build a website with separate pages for design, patios, fencing, turfing and maintenance, ask every customer for a review, and post short before-and-after videos. Plan your marketing in winter so you’re visible when people start booking spring projects.

Is it worth marketing a landscaping business?

Yes. It’s a big, active industry. The British Association of Landscape Industries’ Lay of the Land 2025 report says the sector contributes £38bn to UK GDP and supports 722,000 jobs. It also found 45% of members were confident about keeping or growing their business over the next year.

That’s a lot of competition, too. The firms that get the best jobs aren’t always the best landscapers. They’re the ones customers can find, trust and contact easily.

How should a landscaper set up Google Business Profile?

Most landscapers work at the customer’s home, so you’re a service-area business. Google’s service area guidance says to remove your address if customers don’t visit, and add up to 20 areas within about two hours’ drive.

  • Choose the most specific category for your main work. Google’s category guidance says not to use categories as keywords.
  • List every service: garden design, patios, fencing, decking, turfing, planting, maintenance.
  • Upload project photos often. Google’s photo guidelines accept JPG or PNG, recommend 720 by 720 pixels and say photos should represent reality, so avoid heavy filters.
  • Add short videos too. Google allows Business Profile videos up to 30 seconds.

Our Google Maps listing guide covers the rest of your profile in more detail.

What should a landscaping website include?

Your website should look like your best garden: clear, tidy and easy to move around. It needs to show your work and make it simple to ask for a quote.

PageWhy it matters
Garden designHigher-value work. Show plans next to finished photos
Patios and pavingPopular search. Show materials you use and finished jobs
Fencing and deckingSay clearly if you also do storm repairs
Turfing and plantingSeasonal. Say when the best time to book is
Garden maintenanceRegular income. Explain how visits work
Project galleryOne page per project with before and after photos
Areas coveredReal jobs in each town, not copied text

A good gallery does a lot of selling for you. Google’s image SEO guide says alt text is the most important image detail, so describe each photo, such as “Porcelain patio with raised sleeper beds”. Use short, descriptive file names instead of camera numbers.

How do landscapers plan marketing around the seasons?

Landscaping is seasonal, so your marketing should be too. Work back from when people want the job done.

WhenMarketing focus
WinterUpdate your website, plan content, ask for reviews, post design work
Late winterPush spring bookings: “Booking spring garden projects now”
SpringPost finished jobs weekly, respond to enquiries fast
SummerPromote maintenance plans, show patios and outdoor living spaces
AutumnPlanting, fencing repairs, tidy-ups, and next year’s design work

Use Google Offer posts for seasonal deals. Google’s posts help page says offers need a title and dates, and posts older than six months are archived unless you set dates.

Do landscapers need social media?

It helps, because gardens look great on camera. Before-and-after videos are the easiest place to start. Film from the same spot before you start and when you finish, and keep it under a minute.

  • Film a slow walk around each finished garden.
  • Show a time-lapse of a patio going down.
  • Answer one common question per video, like “When should I lay turf?”
  • Keep house numbers and faces out of shot unless you have permission.

Our video marketing guide for tradesmen has more filming tips. If editing is the bit you never get to, our video editing service can turn your clips into reels.

What should a landscaper’s quote form ask?

Enough to price the job, but not so much that people give up. A short form with a photo upload works well for most landscapers.

  1. Name, phone number and postcode.
  2. What they want done, with tick boxes for patios, fencing, turfing, design and maintenance.
  3. Rough size of the garden or area.
  4. Photos of the space, uploaded from their phone.
  5. When they’d like the work done.

Photos save you a wasted visit. If a customer sends three pictures of their garden, you can often give a rough idea of cost before you go. Reply quickly, even if it’s just to say when you’ll call back.

How do landscapers get more reviews?

Ask at the right moment: when the customer is standing in their finished garden. Google’s review guidance says you can share a link or QR code to make it easy, but you can’t offer anything in return for a review.

UK law is strict on this too. Since April 2025 the DMCC Act bans fake reviews and incentivised reviews that aren’t disclosed, with possible fines of up to 10% of turnover. Ask every customer, reply to every review and let the numbers build.

Can landscapers sell maintenance plans online?

Yes, and it’s worth doing. Regular maintenance smooths out the quiet months that design and build work can leave. Give it its own page that explains what each visit includes, how often you come and how to sign up.

Show a simple example, such as “fortnightly visit: lawn, edges, hedges and beds”. Add a short FAQ about what happens in bad weather and how to pause or cancel. Then mention the page in your Google posts and on every invoice for one-off jobs, so happy customers know the option is there.

Should landscapers pay for ads?

Ads can fill gaps, especially in late winter when you want spring bookings. Google search ads for terms like “patio installers near me” catch people ready to hire. Facebook ads aimed at homeowners within a few miles can work for design and maintenance plans.

Start small and track every enquiry. Our Facebook ads guide for tradesmen shows how to set up a local campaign, and our Google Ads service can run search ads for you.

FAQs

What is the best marketing for a landscaping business?

A complete Google Business Profile, a photo-led website with a page for each service, steady genuine reviews and short before-and-after videos. These work together and keep bringing enquiries.

Should a landscaper show their address on Google?

Not if customers don’t visit you. Hide the address and add up to 20 service areas within about two hours’ drive, as Google advises for service-area businesses.

When should landscapers advertise for spring work?

Start in late winter, so your Google profile, website and social posts are already visible before spring arrives.

How many photos should a landscaper post on Google?

There’s no set number. Post real project photos regularly, ideally every week or two, and follow Google’s guidelines of JPG or PNG files at around 720 by 720 pixels.

Do landscapers need a website if they have Facebook?

Yes. A website is yours, ranks on Google and can show your full gallery. Facebook rules change often, while your website keeps working.
